US is ranked 37th in the world, #1 spender in the world, and 99% of the global opioid epidemic. This is a crisis with 175 deaths per day. That is a lot for our physicians and HCP’s (Healthcare professionals). The consumerism of healthcare, grueling educational requirements and now payer and technological leads coupled with extremely long hours leads to high physician burnout.
A Medscape survey found that 51 percent of doctors surveyed in 2016 said they experienced burnout, an increase of more than 25 percent since 2013. This dovetails with a 2015 paper published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings that reported a burnout rate of 54.4 percent in 2014, up from 45.5 percent in 2011.
The results can lead to a few things including but not limited to lower patient satisfaction and care quality, higher medical error rates and malpractice risk, higher physician and staff turnover, physician alcohol and drug abuse and addiction, and ultimately physician suicide.
